Are smart refrigerators worth it?
This month our focus is on smart appliances. Smart appliances incorporate modern technology to enhance our lives in a meaningful way. Everyone has different needs and values. It’s my goal to explain how many of the tech-forward features could provide you more value than you thought possible.
How does a smart refrigerator work?
Smart refrigerators can do more than keep your food cold. Your refrigerator is considered “smart” if it connects to wifi. Many smart appliances today will walk you through the setup on the control panel. Every smart appliance has a corresponding app that you download on your smartphone or tablet. When you receive your new refrigerator, you will receive instructions to program your new refrigerator. From your phone, you will be able to adjust the temperature and monitor refrigerator performance. Some models give you more functions like the ability to sync your calendar or view the inside of your refrigerator from your phone.
How tech-savvy do I have to be to use a smart refrigerator?
You don’t need to be a tech whiz to use a smart refrigerator. For the majority of smartphone users, it should take you less than 30 minutes to set up your smart refrigerator. I’ll admit I don’t like to read directions. If you’re a visual learner like me, you will find many tutorials online that walk you through setting up your new appliance.
What else can a smart refrigerator do that a normal refrigerator cannot?
Features vary from brand to brand. Here are a few of my favorites:
Never miss a play
Let’s say you are watching your favorite sports team on your TV in the living room, you then get called to the kitchen to clean the dishes. With Samsung electronics, you can take the game with you from your TV to your Smartphone, and then to your Family Hub refrigerator. You’ll never miss a play and your partner will be happy that you could help out!
We’ve all done it, stood in front of the refrigerator with the door wide open debating what we want to make. Now you can take a look inside your refrigerator without opening the door. With the LG Instaview refrigerators, you can knock on the front and see the inside.
Monitor the health of your refrigerator
Remote diagnostics is one of the most powerful innovations in the appliance industry and it benefits manufacturers and homeowners alike. Regardless of whether you buy a smart or a standard refrigerator, they are complex machines with electronics, mechanical components, and water. Chances are, you might need to schedule service on any appliance. Refrigerators are especially prone and having your refrigerator break could cost you hundreds in food loss. Appliances will come with a one-year manufacturers warranty but you should consider protecting your investment further.
Do smart features impact the life expectancy of my appliance?
Smart features seem like they would lead to more problems. The truth is actually the opposite. Smart refrigerators can self-diagnose service issues. It takes the guesswork out of the service process.
How much does a smart refrigerator cost?
This all seems too good to be true, smart refrigerators sound very expensive. The interesting thing is you will find many of the tech-forward appliances in the mid-range market as well as the luxury market. You don’t have to spend top dollar to get a smart refrigerator although luxury brands are beginning to incorporate wifi connectivity.

Are smart refrigerators worth it?
When it comes to refrigeration most of the innovation is useful. At the very least you have peace of mind that the door is closed and your food is fresh. Having a refrigerator that can monitor its own health and performance could save you time and headaches down the road. Smart refrigerators with multiple capabilities could reduce clutter such as a countertop coffee maker or small television set. Owning a smart refrigerator will likely be standard in the future. Appliances are getting smarter and it’s really exciting to watch the industry evolve.
