Side-by-Side Refrigerators with Ice Makers

Q: Does a side-by-side refrigerator's ice maker need a water line?

An automatic refrigerator ice maker needs a connected water supply to replenish ice without manual filling. Before installation, check the refrigerator's instructions for supply-line specifications, water-pressure requirements, and shutoff-valve access. If your kitchen does not already have a refrigerator water connection, plan that plumbing work before using the ice maker.

Q: Does an ice maker always include an exterior ice dispenser?

No. An ice maker produces ice, while a dispenser delivers it through a separate outlet. Some refrigerators store ice in a freezer bin that you access by opening the door; others dispense ice from the exterior. Check the dispenser description carefully, because an exterior water dispenser does not necessarily dispense ice.

Q: What does a dual ice maker do?

Dual ice maker designs can offer separate ice-making systems or different ice types, depending on the refrigerator. The term does not guarantee a particular ice shape or production rate. Compare the listed ice types, ice-bin locations, and manufacturer-stated output to understand what the setup adds to your daily routine.

Q: What maintenance does a refrigerator ice maker need?

Follow the owner's manual for cleaning the ice bin, maintaining the dispenser if equipped, and replacing any water filter. Filter replacement intervals and cleaning methods vary by refrigerator, so use the instructions for your model rather than a universal schedule. Keep the filter identifier handy when ordering a replacement.

Q: Can I turn off the ice maker without turning off the refrigerator?

The ice maker can typically be turned off independently of the refrigerator's cooling system. Depending on the design, the control may be a switch, a shutoff arm, or a setting on the control panel. Follow the owner's manual for the correct procedure, especially if you plan to disconnect the water supply.

Side-by-side refrigerators with ice makers keep fresh and frozen food in separate, full-height compartments and make ice automatically when connected to a water supply. Compare counter-depth and standard-depth designs, freezer organization, and ice dispenser options to find a refrigerator that fits your kitchen and daily routine.

Side-by-Side Refrigerators with Ice Makers

Choosing a side-by-side refrigerator with an ice maker starts with how you store groceries and serve drinks. Look beyond total capacity in cu. ft.: shelf layout, door bins, and ice-bin placement affect everyday organization. Check whether you retrieve ice from inside the freezer or through an exterior dispenser, since an ice maker does not automatically include through-the-door dispensing.

Nominal 33- and 36-inch widths help narrow your search, but they are not cabinet cutout dimensions. Compare the exact width, height, and depth in inches with your opening, including the manufacturer's required ventilation and door-opening clearances. Counter-depth refrigerators sit closer to the cabinet line, while standard-depth designs generally provide deeper storage; doors and handles may still extend beyond the counters. Check nearby walls, drawer access, and the doorways, stairs, and turns along the delivery path.

Plan the water connection before installation so the ice maker can operate as intended. Review the installation instructions for water-pressure requirements, an accessible shutoff valve, approved supply-line materials, and electrical requirements. Confirm which connection components are included and which must be purchased separately, and account for replacement filters when comparing ongoing maintenance.
