Rated 4 out of 5 by Overall great value I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this washer-dryer combo. We live in a very small New York apartment, and size and noise were a big issue in selecting a washer-dryer. LG seems to have hit the mark with this one. Very stylish, easy to use, and it has excellent capacity for the overall size of the machine. For reference, it washes the same amount of clothes that the typical smaller commercial machine you find at a New York City laundromat handles. It's very easy to use; dial in settings for wash and dry, and then walk away. The wash cycle is very quiet, and the machine uses very little water. The overall dry time tends to be longer than that of the usual electric dryer, but not by much. I had seen reviews elsewhere that complained that the similar larger version of this machine didn't dry clothes adequately and left them damp, but I've had no difficulty getting clothes as dry as I want them to be in this machine. I suspect that those who had complaints were packing clothes in too tightly - with these (and most) dryers the clothes need to be free to tumble in order to dry completely. The spin cycle on the faster speeds can lead to some vibration here on the 4th floor of an apartment building, especially at first when the clothes are still wet and relatively heavy with water, but I find the machine balances loads and spins them remarkably quietly considering the rotational speeds reached (1300 RPM). After a minute or two, when the initial water weight in the clothes has decreased, the machine is remarkably quiet, and the vibration almost disappears, even at high spin speeds. Mounting the machine on vibration isolation pads seemed to solve the vibration issues for me. The only issue I have, and the only thing that decreased my overall rating of this machine, is the noisy water pump. The machine otherwise is incredibly quiet, except for the water pump that expels the water from the machine. This pump is active only intermittently during the wash and rinse cycle, but it runs very frequently, although for brief periods, during the entire dry cycle and makes a relatively loud (for this otherwise almost silent machine) noise somewhat like an old door buzzer. The noise is similar to the electric water pump on our espresso machine at work, so I think it's a function of the type of pump used, but I can't imagine that there's not a quieter pump out there that could be used to make this machine overall the most incredibly quiet washer-dryer on the market today? Come on, LG engineers - just do the right thing and find a quieter pump or install appropriate sound dampening material! Granted, the noise is not unbearable (and may not be an issue for those with a separate room for the washer-dryer), but many in the market for a smaller machine like this one will be installing it in the kitchen etc, and it's odd that the amazingly quiet nature of this machine has to be marred by the noise of the water pump... Overall, if you need a compact, stylish, easy-to-use combo washer-dryer, I would definitely recommend this one. 10/17/10
Rated 1 out of 5 by Horrible The washer to forever to wash and left the cloth wet, wrinkled and it got stuck on 6 mins. never turned off by itself. 10/8/10
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great little washer So, we needed a small combo washer/dryer for our laundry as we were planning to put it into an already packed utility closet. We had a typical white stacked unit in a kitchen closet, but we wanted to open that up for our ongoing kitchen remodel. This LG unit was just the ticket. After 2 months, we are settling in well with our new LG. A tad expensive, especially compared to other combo units (even bigger ones made by LG!), but I was comforted that it technically has a larger capacity than our large stacked unit. With no agitator, it holds a good amount of clothing. It can't be filled all the way up as it will have trouble drying, but I get similar drying results at 75% full as I do at 50% full. Clothes come out HOT. So hot I have to leave the door open for a few minutes and let them chill out. They do come out a little wrinkly though. I've noticed that if I remove my clothes right when the machine is finished, it helps to minimize the wrinkles. As for washing, this thing is amazing. I don't know if it is the machine, the HE detergent that we have to buy now, or the fact that I use a dab of liquid fabric softener, but my clothes *smell* clean and fresh now. I don't remember that with any washer in the past. The machine does a good job of sensing how full the drum is and can adjust the cycle time accordingly. I have found that the speed wash setting + Fast Spin + the normal dry setting works great and usually has the load completed in just under 3 hours. I like that it will continue to spin your clothes occasionally after the dry cycle ends (I think up to 3 or 4 hours) to help keep wrinkles at a minimum. I think that sums up the good. For the bad, or more irritating really, there are a few things. This machine, for *this* much money, does not have a delayed timer. It would be awesome to set the machine to run while I'm at work and come home to just finished laundry. I understand past models have that feature. Not so with this one. Also, don't bother with "flood-safe" washer hoses. They won't work. Normal washer hoses only. Also, after finally figuring out that which hoses we needed (the included hoses were too short), we kept hearing this awful banging sound every time the washer would pump water in. Turns out this is called water hammer and many front-loading LG machines have this problem as the water inlet valves are too fast (as I understand). So, after buying two 3rd party water hammer arresters for installation on the back of the washer, all is good and quiet now. I sure wish we had known that to begin with, you can see the space we are working with. Pulling that thing in & out is no simple task. Overall- Quite happy with the machine. It washes & dries well. For a family of 2 + dog, it is more than enough. I only wash my clothes every 1-2 weeks, and used to be able to do everything in one color load and one white load. With this new machine, my routine is still intact. Nice! 10/14/10
