The Hoover story begins in 1907. Murray Spangler, an inventor who worked nights as a janitor, had an asthma problem. He called upon his inventor's creativity to find a solution to the dust that aggravated his asthma as he swept up at night. Spangler gathered a tin soap box, a fan, a sateen pillow case and a broom handle, and assembled an odd-looking, cumbersome contraption that managed to pull the dust away from the air he breathed. He quickly realized that this "suction sweeper," as he called it, had enormous sales potential, and he began seeking financial backing. W.H. "Boss" Hoover, owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop, bought the patent from Spangler in 1908, retained him as a partner, and soon had six employees assembling six units a day in a corner of the leather goods shop. Now that's truly a humble beginning.

I bought this vaccum on 5-1-11, it worked fine for 14 months and the handle just snapped in half while I was sweeping one day. It was replaced on 8-1-12 after not being able to be repaired. The same exact thing happened last week again, handle broke! It was only 10 months old!

Liked the large bag - hate bagless vacuums because of the mess. But the handle broke just above the bag and it was $200 for the replacement part. That is pretty much the cost of a new one so no value to that. Went with a cheap bagless figured I would just throw it away if a part broke.

I've owned this vacuum for close to 3 years now and have had it in service the same number of times. The service rep knew exactly what was wrong because he's worked on countless others. Do yourself a favor, buy something else.

I never write a review for products, but I could not pass up on this product (this should say A LOT to Hoover). I have had this vacuum for 2 weeks now and LOVE it. I purchased a Dyson Animal Canister 1st, and HATED it, so I returned it (the reviews stated this was the best). I then purchased a LG Kompressor Canister and it almost caught on fire the first time I used it..and it did a poor job cleaning. I then decided on the Hoover Platinum upright. The 3rd time was a charm. This has to be the best vacuum I have purchased in many years. It has cut my cleaning time in half. The only suggestion would be to offer a rotating pet brush for the stairs and furniture for the canister portion of this. GREAT JOB HOOVER for making a quality product. You now have won me over for life.
