The Hoover story begins in 1907. Murray Spangler, an inventor who worked nights as a janitor, had an asthma problem. He called upon his inventor's creativity to find a solution to the dust that aggravated his asthma as he swept up at night. Spangler gathered a tin soap box, a fan, a sateen pillow case and a broom handle, and assembled an odd-looking, cumbersome contraption that managed to pull the dust away from the air he breathed. He quickly realized that this "suction sweeper," as he called it, had enormous sales potential, and he began seeking financial backing. W.H. "Boss" Hoover, owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop, bought the patent from Spangler in 1908, retained him as a partner, and soon had six employees assembling six units a day in a corner of the leather goods shop. Now that's truly a humble beginning.

Rated 2 out of 5 by bbella Not good for plush carpeting
I have had this vacuum for years and really liked it. It is lightweight and it uses premium bags. We just got new carpeting throughout our home. It is plusher than the old carpeting, but by no means a thick shag. I was very disappointed to find we could hardly push this vacuum across it. "Auto" height adjustment is a joke. I'm now faced with having to purchase a new vacuum cleaner.

Rated 5 out of 5 Hoover Happy!
I am a mom, homemaker and professional maid by trade. I have had this Hoover for 3 years and it runs as good as the day I purchased it! The wheels are fine and not flimsy at all. This vacuum, by far, outperforms the Oreck on cleaning and suction. Also the Oreck has left black marks on my customers carpets when the supposedly "superior wheels" get a little milage under them, and I have had more problems with the belts on the Oreck then the Hoover. The canister that comes with it is great as well. Nice long cord. Use it to on hardwood and tile before mopping to clean up dog hair, food, and debris and, of course, the stairs. Very easy to change the bag with a nice feature that keeps the dust from flying everywhere when you remove the bag (Oreck does not have this). Also a light takes the guess work out of when to change the bag. There is a convienent handle on the back of the vacuum that makes it extremely easy to carry up and down the stairs, and the canister has an adjustable and comfortable carrying strap. While cleaning floors with the canister the best way to wear this is with the strap all the way extended and across your body instead of hanging off your shoulder, that way you are free to move quickly and you won't have it slipping off your shoulder and dropping to the floor. I love this Hoover, in my opinion it was worth every cent and I am going to purchase another one to keep on the second floor.

Rated 2 out of 5 by AnotherUnhappyCustomer poor construction
While the unit's general performance is good it is not well built. I've had my unit for a little over 2 years now. While my wife was using the upright unit the handle broke when she tilted it back and it accidently hit the floor. Locating a replacement handle has been fairly difficult. Searching online the handle will cost almost half the cost of the unit alone.
On another note the hand held unit is EXTREMELY loud. Save your money!
