The Hoover story begins in 1907. Murray Spangler, an inventor who worked nights as a janitor, had an asthma problem. He called upon his inventor's creativity to find a solution to the dust that aggravated his asthma as he swept up at night. Spangler gathered a tin soap box, a fan, a sateen pillow case and a broom handle, and assembled an odd-looking, cumbersome contraption that managed to pull the dust away from the air he breathed. He quickly realized that this "suction sweeper," as he called it, had enormous sales potential, and he began seeking financial backing. W.H. "Boss" Hoover, owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop, bought the patent from Spangler in 1908, retained him as a partner, and soon had six employees assembling six units a day in a corner of the leather goods shop. A humble beginning indeed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by 3Mom Hose breaks frequently and is now out of stock
I've only had this a couple years, but the hose has already broken several times. It's made of a brittle plastic and dents and cracks with even very gentle use. Now the hose is out of stock, which makes the whole unit useless to me.

Loud, clunky, heavy, awkward to maneuver, moderate suction, vents blow dust around (I literally chase dust bunnies around - it's as though the exhaust fights the suction), hose is way too short and frequently comes out, attachments don't stay put, cord gets in the way. I regret this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dawn Better than the expensive ones
I have an expensive bagless vacuum and it only works good on carpet and the roller has to be replaced often - plus it doesn't pick up much except pet hair. This Tempo is the best vacuum I have ever had - it picks up everything - well worth the money (and it is one of the lesser expensive vacuums) - I refer this product to everyone I know.

Rated 2 out of 5 by GreenGirl24 Goes Through So Many Belts!
If I had to review just the job the vacuum does I would give it 5 stars. It has gotten me through the last 4 years and done a wonderful job. I use it several times a week. That being said, if I had it to do over again I would buy another vacuum. I go through more belts than is anywhere near reasonable and I'm quite tired of buying them at this point. Not only do they break, but the belt comes off often too. It's a pain to deal with and the cost of belts adds up over time.
