Totally integrated and so silent you don't see it and you don't hear it -which is the reason we bought it. If you use the economy or the short cycle it doesn't leave everything perfectly dry though, which is inconvenient. Given its cost we would have expected better. The motor broke after only 6 months of use. According to the technician it was due to a small electrical surge (???) yet we have spent the entire holiday season washing loads of dishes by hand. Customer service is good which helped. Overall, it is a good product, it is much better than the Fischer and Paykel but maybe we should have gotten a Miele (if only we'd have been willing to shell out an additional $600!).
