The sales listings tout how quiet and energy efficient it is. It is quiet. It is energy efficient because it does not have heated drying !! The dishes are never completely dry ! Carbon steel knives become rust spotted. Stainless steel knives do not become spotted. Every coffee mug has a lake of water staring at you when you open it after a cycle. The cycles are very long, mainly 3 hours ! The bottom rack has overly large bottom spacing and small dishes hit the rotating spray arm. I put wire across the large spacing to remedy this. The silverware basket is too small and fills up long before the rest of the washer. I purchased a second silverware basket to take care of this. Now the bottom rack is a little short of space. You have to be extremely careful to not trip the door latch with the door open. This will cause a service call, unless you're daring enough to pull the washer out to reset the latch. The installer didn't place the unit properly under our counter causing a door leak ! A second installer didn't get it right either. I had to tweak the installation so the door would seal properly. The control panel is very user unfriendly. Whatever happened to a rotating knob with a full wash and a short wash?!! A very expensive washer and a very poor value. I'll be replacing it with an American made unit shortly.

Our old kitchenaid dishwasher had better capacity and easier loading than anything out there today. However, even with a front vent, the steam was was damaging the cabinets, taking the paint off within months of repainting. The new models of kitchenaid, jennaire, whirlpool etc. are even worse because the vent is on the side. The Bosch does not have a vent. Other models that either had vents on the bottom or no vents were GE and LG. However, GE was more expensive and much noisier and didn't load as easily. LG has reliability problems, not as quiet and lacked a water softener which is a big plus with today's non-phosphate detergent. The quieter models were still pretty expensive. Some poeple complained that this leaves a moldy smell in the dishwasher, but we had that same problem with out last kitchenaid vented dishwasher. With both that and the new one, we leave the door slightly ajar - no problems with smells, mold.
We avoided Miele for two reasons: (1) can be difficult/slow to get replacement parts. (2) They do not use db ratings. They have their own system (Q1-Q5) and refused to tell me how that corresponded to the db ratings that others use. So, we have no idea how quiet their dishwashers really are. One factor for us was noise and I can't tell what I'm getting with Miele. I think this is slimey business practice.
We took our dishes to the store and tried out the different brands/models. Much to my surprise, they fit better in the Bosch (even with the 3rd rack) than in any of the other brands. The adjustable middle rack made a big difference. If we put it on the middle setting, we can get fit very tall plastic cups on that rack, our large dinner plates on the bottom and still use the third rack. However, it did take a little bit of time to figure out the best way to load it.
It is indeed much quieter than our old model. It seems to clean very well (we always prerinse so no data on skipping that step). We really like the water softener, and the front control panel. We also really like the express wash (30 minutes compared to 2+ hours - the norm for all new dishwasher). We had read various complaints of steam from dishwashers and oven destroying button labels or controls for the appliances (incl. Bosch dishwashers) so we chose to avoid the hidden controls. However, we also really like that we can see the remaining time on the front panel so we don't accidentally open the dishwasher during the dry cycle. It also has indicator lights that let you know when the rinse aid and water softener salt need to be refilled. On our last dishwasher, we had to guess.
I like the silverware basket with the handle. Lets us quickly put away the silverware. If we need more space, we can take it out and use the top (3rd) rack instead which is nice. That partly makes up for the lower capacity.
There are few negatives: the capacity. First, it's not quite as deep as the American brands. Second, the spacing between the bars on the bottom of the bottom rack are wider than our old dishwasher. This means smaller things tend to fall through. We had expected to be able to put plastics on the bottom (the dishwasher is supposed to be safe for this), but most of our plastic containers and lids are too small and fall through. We also can't put them on the little fold out shelves because the sides of the racks are shallow and light things fall over the edge into the bottom of the dishwasher. However, there are closely spaced tongs on the middle rack that hold lots of lids and much better than our old dishwasher so not a big problem.
Plastics don't dry well but then they didn't in our old dishwasher either, so we're used to that. Everything else does seem to dry. With our old dishwasher, we needed to let dishes cool off because they were too hot to put away. Not a problem with this dishwasher (which I guess is a positive not a negative).
We bought this from AJMadison for $1350 (no tax or shipping) and there was a $150 rebate which made this a $1200 dishwasher. There really didn't seem to be anything else at this price point that was competetive.
