In the process of renovating our very small vacation ski condo, I have used the portable induction unit this past winter. Tried the single portable unit to see if I could learn to like induction cooking and after (for me) what was a steep learning curve to master the controls-my answer is a resounding yes!
True you do need just the right magnet friendly pans, none of my All Clad copper lined ones worked. The less expensive all stainless worked fine and any good cookware store can provide induction friendly wares. Most pleasantly the induction unit works great with very old well seasoned cast iron, and these made perfect omelets.
I tried the usual cooking tests - very quick pasta boiling water, fast tea kettle warm up and happily perfect chocolate melting without a double boiler. The temperature controls are amazingly quick and surprisingly will take a full boil down to simmer quicker that one would expect. I cook daily with gas and have used electricity for years in our vacation condo. Induction is really quite different from both.
If you are limited to electricity (as we are in Teton Village), I highly recommend trying this portable unit. Once you figure out the controls it works great, gives off no residual heat and is very easy to clean. My only complaint is the button activation sound is a little loud for early morning coffee making!
I now plan to build in a double burner unit which I am sure will meet my needs and save 12 inches of very dear counter space.

I read the one review which gave this cooktop one star because you have to buy cookware. That is true. BUT... This cooktop is super fast and well worth the money. INDUCTION is the fastest cooking you can get. So it is worth the price of pots and pans. He said AJ Madison did not tell him. THAT may be so but the local appliance dealer would have and so much info is out there on induction it would be easy to find out. I own a FAGOR built in induction. I got this cuz I travel a lot. It works really well. I love it so much I got some for X mas presents. At $200 it is a steal. Viking is like $500 bucks. Fagor is a well known brand so ignore that other review. IF you have the proper pots it will be super fast. It will simmer well. YOUR pots may work. Stick a magnet to the bottom and if it sticks it works. If not go to costco and buy some good pans!

I have never used such a product before, this cook top heats faster than any stove top I have ever use. Most of my cook ware works with the stove top although I did have to buy a couple pans, which by the way are not expensive. I never use my stove any more, the portable top is all I need. I would recommend this product to every one.

Please be careful about this Product.
You should know that this product only work with very specific pots or fans. Unless you are very familiar about that, you should consider one more time to purchase. AJ Madison should warn the customer about the limitation about usage.
I just found out after I plugged in and tried to use them with regular cookware. I thought it was broken in the beginning. Now I have to buy the affordable cookware for this stove which I have to spend another 200~400 dollars. Thank you.
