Ductless Split Systems Air Conditioning
No ductwork? No problem. Incredibly quiet, sleek and energy-efficient, ductless split systems are the smart way to cool rooms without ductwork-even those without windows or exterior walls. And new for 2011, high-efficiency 115V models with Inverter Technology!
Why choose wall-mounted?
If you have one or more rooms without exterior walls or windows, a wall-mounted ductless split system will work beautifully. The indoor air handler is sleek, unobtrusive and quiet. You need only a 2" clearance from the ceiling, so you'll have lots of placement options. All systems come with a remote control, so even units high on the wall are easy to operate. There's also an optional wired, wall-mounted controller for models over 18,000 BTU.

BD Smart Purchase
I bought this unit for a room that was an addition to my house. The original house HVAC could not handle the additional space. I installed this 9000btu unit with the short line kit in approximately 6 hours...not including trips to the hardware store. Installation was fairly easy once you overcome cutting a 2-1/2 inch hole in an exterior wall. You will need a vacuum pump to draw down the refrigerant lines. It was well explained in the instuctions. I would suggest a wall bracket to mount the outdoor compressor. It helps the aesthetics. I would also suggest a conduit for the refrigerant lines, electrical line and drain line. Also for aesthetics. The room cooled immediately and maintained temperature. The compressor is quiet. Make sure the drain line is always draining downward. This unit removes a lot of moisture from the room.

This is the third split system ducted and nonducted that I have installed. I already had all of the tools necessary for installation, I am a very mechanically inclined, and found this system easy to install. Special equipment you will need is as follows:
1. Vacuum pump
2. Vacuum gauge
3. A/C refrigerant gauges (just for pump and gauge connections to evacuate the system
4. 5/16" r410a gauge adapter
This system is very quiet - both the indoor and outdoor units.

While I'm no All American Handyman, I am fairly skilled at most home projects. This one, however, took quite some time and left me scratching my head at several times with the included instructions. Top challenges:
1) Running the line set is challenging if you are running through walls and ceiling space. If at all possible go with the shortest run possible. The 35' line set is a bear to work with.
2) Line set connection says to use some sort of oil between the connections. Still to this day after googling around, I don't know what this is and forgoed it. Seemed no to make a difference.
3) The drain hose from the indoor unit to outdoors was a challenge to figure out. My suggestion (and what I used) was a dishwasher drain hose. This has the rigidity needed no to bend. I also moved the drain side so that it ran straight into the wall. After reading the instructions you get a fear about draining to outside if you live in a cold weather climate. My recommendation is that this is better than draining to a crawl space which can attract termites and cause mold. Keep in mind the 1/4" drop every foot for proper water flow.
4) When you buy a pump and hose set to pump down the line set, you will need a 3/8 R410a adapter. Nowhere is this clear in the instruction manual and it isn't a part your local mega home improvement center will sell.
5) When you get everything installed and first turn it on, it takes several minutes for the unit to get up to speed (warming or cooling air at a very low speed). I thought the unit was broken and flipped the breaker because I thought nothing was happening. THE UNIT RUNS EXTREMELY QUIET and at low speeds most of the time.
6) Remote only works when aimed at the unit. It's infrared, not RF. So with it mounted on the wall, you'll need to remove it, aim it at the unit then put it back. More of a training issue for others in the house.
Hopefully the notes here will help others as they install their units.

Luxuries of a Mini-Split (Ductless Split System)
Ductless Split Air Conditioner & Heat Pump products offer wide versatility in solving your cooling and heating requirements. The Indoor unit (evaporator) is mounted inside the room, and usually goes very unnoticeable. It is connected to the outdoor unit (condenser) via refrigerant lines & inter-unit wiring through a 3-1/2" opening in the wall. Since no ductwork is required, installation is simple, fast & efficient. There is no need to use up window space or cut large openings in existing walls, which could undermine the integrity of your structure, and even pose security risks. Since the Rotary compressor is located in the outdoor unit, compressor operating noise is virtually eliminated from the indoor. The indoor unit has been uniquely designed to provide Whisper Quiet operation while delivering comfort throughout the room(s). In addition, rotary compressors provide efficient, powerful cooling at the lowest noise levels in the industry.
