Product Reviews
Rated 2 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Miele vs. GE I purchased the Miele specifically due to the nearly unanimous positive reviews of the Miele dishwashers and the company as a whole. My terrible experience of ongoing problems with my new GE ($1700) Profile dishwasher and the complete lack of quality control I observed with the GE products made me very sensitive to customer satisfaction and performance reviews. The Crystal replaced the GE $1700 Profile dishwasher which had been service a total of 7 times, replaced by GE once and finally bought back, all in less than one year of ownership, due to continued problems with (two) Profile dishwashers. As for performance, the Miele Crystal washes as well but not significantly better than the (working correctly) GE Profile. The Miele is slightly louder with somewhat longer total wash times. I have not experienced the "drying" issue reported in US reviews of the Crystal. In fact, it dries significantly better than the GE Profile. Again, the main reason for purchasing the Miele was to obtain an appliance I could rely on not needing service for many, many years. My dismal experience with GE products and the GE company made me extremely sensitive to what customers were saying about both the dishwashers they owned and the response to problems by the manufacturers. Hence, my decision to buy Miele. I, however, can not comment on reliability as I have only had the machine for several weeks at this point in time. Some other thoughts: The smaller inside volume of the Miele does significantly impact the number of items I can wash in a load. The actual ability to clean items placed in the small side racks is no better, i.e. really does not properly clean or rinse items, than any other dishwasher. Anything put in these racks if the rack below has items will not get cleaned. These small racks must be for a marketing only addition as there is no way items not being splashed directly by the rotating wands can get cleaned. Very annoying as this impacts total washing capacity that much more. I will say they did not work in the GE either. Again, I'm certain marketing forced this on the engineers because everyone else does it. Washing/rinsing cannot take place without direct water jet spray application which is blocked by the items below. And a miner but important complaint has to do with the kick. Requiring it be sawed to fit is ridiculous not to mention it being a black piece of plastic and not a matching stainless kick. So my final thoughts. It does the job asked and if it lasts for ten years not needing service I will be satisfied with my purchase despite my caveats mentioned above. 7/29/13
Rated 1 out of 5 by Nope I bought this machine because I believed it was the best around. I liked the design and the solid metal construction. What I discovered was 1) there's a problem with a weird smell in the Mieles that's well-documented. If you luck out and don't get a smelly Miele, no problem. If you get one and you're sensitive to smells, the machine will drive you crazy. There's a lot of talk about this on varous internet forums, including Gardenweb, that suggest how to remove the smell. That usually involves using vinegar and also dishwasher cleansers that also have very strong masking perfumes. One New York City kitchen designer says many of his clients have had to heavily clean the machine once a month for six months to remove! 2) Just as I was hoping I'd finally de-odorofied the machine, it started making its own debris. The Miele tech observed this brownish-yellowish gunk in the upturned glass I'd used for a vinegar wash, and photographed it. The tech asked me to repeat the vinegar wash, which I did, with the same results, the appearance of gunk in the glass. The company then offered to replace, but I was done, and decided to pursue the money-back guarantee they make. Ultimately it was not easy to get them to do this, but they did. I really really wanted to like this machine, as I was looking for a machine that would last a long time, and this one seemed like it would be durable. And my Miele vacuum cleaners are very good! Nosing around on the internet, I found theories about the smell. It's manufacturing chemicals; it's a residue of the water they put in the machine to test it; it's a petroleum product used to treat the machine to make it quiet; it's what happens when the machines remain in shipping containers in the summer in New Jersey. Who knows? About both the smell and the debris, no one at Miele would directly comment. I even talked to the plumber, and then did a test, to be sure there's no way the debris could be from my heater or pipes. To be clear, when the debris appeared had not had any plates or food in it for 7 full washes. Obviously even the best company can make products that fail, but I do wish that people I talked to at Miele would have been more transparent and less occupied with telling me how great their products are. That's largely what made me want to move on, that and the work and time it took to get them to honor their guarantee. 11/4/13
