If you think that getting a smoothtop cooktop means less cleaning, think again. I was sick of food getting stuck under the burners in our standard electric cooktop and pulling them out to clean, so I figured that the smooth top was the way to go.
But here's the thing - with a smooth, black surface, you see EVERYTHING that lands on it, even little drops of water that wouldn't show up on your standard electric coil cooktop. And according to the instruction booklet, any stain that is not cleaned before cooking will become permanent. In other words, you need to clean the stove before each use. I haven't taken the risk to see if that is true or not. So that is a little disappointing, but has nothing to do with the product and everything to do with my lack of research.
But man oh man, when that stove is clean it looks good (sexy according to my husband... hey whatever gets him to clean up)! It has knobs, which I like, and they come off easily if you want to clean around them. (Less important to clean the parts that don't get hot)
There are a few other things to note. One, it has 5 burners which really opens up the amount of space you can use for cooking. The 5th burner is a "warm zone" not really a burner, but I've found it is great for a low simmer, as the "low" setting on the main burners is actually still pretty hot.
Some people say you can't use cast iron on these types of stoves because it will scratch. As long as you don't have food caked to the bottom of your pans (no matter what kind they are) you don't have to worry about scratching. The deal with the cast iron is that it is harder to maintain an even temperature with this stove. Rather than going to a set temp and staying there (like a coil cooktop) it seems to turn on and off a little, it what is probably an attempt to keep a steady temperature. When it puts out heat, it REALLY puts out heat. So with the cast iron, I've found it best to turn it to level 3, and then down to 1.5 or 2 when your oil or whatever is hot enough. It seems crazy to be cooking or frying at such low levels, but that works best with cast iron. And I LOVE cooking with cast iron!
So it puts out a bunch of heat - good for boiling water very fast and other high-temp cooking. I'm looking forward to canning on this stove later in the season.
Overall, even given the challenges with cleaning, we are thrilled with our purchase. This is a very nice cooktop, and on the cheaper end for the features it has. We've only used it for a month and will certainly update this review after a year.
