The Hoover story begins in 1907. Murray Spangler, an inventor who worked nights as a janitor, had an asthma problem. He called upon his inventor's creativity to find a solution to the dust that aggravated his asthma as he swept up at night. Spangler gathered a tin soap box, a fan, a sateen pillow case and a broom handle, and assembled an odd-looking, cumbersome contraption that managed to pull the dust away from the air he breathed. He quickly realized that this "suction sweeper," as he called it, had enormous sales potential, and he began seeking financial backing. W.H. "Boss" Hoover, owner of a leather goods manufacturing shop, bought the patent from Spangler in 1908, retained him as a partner, and soon had six employees assembling six units a day in a corner of the leather goods shop. Now that's a humble beginning.

We bought this carpet cleaner recently and tried it a couple of days back. My question is how many times do I need to go over a particular area with light stains? I just want to make sure that I do not have too much soap left behind on the carpet. Also, do I clean the carpet one more time with plain water?

absolutely wonder full machine i bought this particular model back in 2005 for its 5 spinning brushes and the option of using the surge button for the extra solution dispensing when needed and the upholstery attachment. it is now may 28th 2013 and now 8 years later it has died well not dead dead the bearings in the motor went. i paid 250.00 for this machine back in 2005 and over the last 8 years i have had to buy no parts at all for it. i have cleaned carpets for other people too and some of them have just been awful and this machine was very reliable i have cleaned many many many rugs over the years with it and have made good money using it too. my machine made its rounds and then some. cleaning tip don't be afraid to run boiling water through it either gently boiled water will do just fine. as for solution its up to you nothing sudsy like pine sol or mr. clean because your floater in the dirty tank will show full because of the suds and you'll have much less water and when full you'll hear the slight high pitch sound when full. 8 long years with this machine and no problems great features and now even cost less now than it was before. going out tomorrow to buy another one of the same model. well built and does and excellent job.

Rated 1 out of 5 by mwoz Built to fall apart
I bought this machine about a year ago and would have given it 4 stars. First the upholstery attachment pump stopped working which I had used only three times. Second the brushes stopped moving. I bought the hoover brand because my old hoover steamvac lasted about eight years. This machine is built to fall apart. I was lucky to have it for one year!

Rated 1 out of 5 by timopeter Won't turn on at all
I have completed assembly and checked all possible issues. I filled the clean water tank with hot water, added the Hoover shampoo as directed. I locked clean tank in place. I plugged machine in and released the handle. I went to the on/off foot button and the machine won't turn on. There is no problem with the outlet and I nothing wrong according to the troubleshooting area of the instructions. It's Saturday and the help line is only Mon-Fri, 8 am to 7 pm. So I have removed the furniture from carpet, vacuumed the entire room and now can't use the SteamVac machine. By the time I might be able to call on Monday, the water will be cold and 5 ounces of shampoo wasted. I was so excited to begin using this machine and now I have wasted hours of a precious day off from work for a machine that is currently worthless. I'll happily delete or update this review if Hoover can make this right.
