In the Beginning
In 1943, Westye F. Bakke built the first freestanding freezer in the basement of his Madison, WI. home. A businessman with a keen ability to anticipate post-World War II refrigeration trends, he founded Sub-Zero Freezer Company just two years later in an old two-car garage. From its modest beginnings, Sub-Zero has become what it is today: the recognized leading manufacturer of premium built-in home refrigerators.
Since its founding, Sub-Zero has pioneered quality products that meet its customers needs. In the mid-1950s, for example, the company developed the built-in refrigerator - a unit that changed the future of kitchen design by fitting within surrounding counter and cabinet space. Over time, the company has refined its early concept and has brought to market a comprehensive line of built-in models, including the 200 Series of undercounter models, its award-winning 500 Series, the design-flexible 600 Series, the integrated 700 Series, and, most recently, the state-of-the-art 400 Series of wine storage.
For 60 years, Sub-Zero has offered innovative, aesthetically appealing and technologically advanced solutions to meet virtually any home refrigeration need. Through foresight and responsiveness, the company has earned its position as an industry leader - a position Sub-Zero intends to maintain well into the new millennium.
What do you want your kitchen to be? Sub-Zero refrigerators, freezers and wine storage units are the definitive kitchen components. Made by hand. Tested to the nth degree. With innovative dual refrigeration. Built to the same exacting standards, Wolf cooking instruments help give the fullest expression to your love of good food and the pleasure of preparing it. Wolf fuels your passion for cooking.

The Sub-Zero BI-36U over-and-under refrigerator/freezer gives you large-capacity refrigeration, plus generous freezer space (and an ice maker) in the two-tier pullout drawer. Bought a new home with the cutout already in place for this size. As the kitchen shows from the living area, I admit I bought it for the look, at first. It is designed like a tank, quiet, cools well and fast. Food does last longer in this fridge, but you'd have to save a lot of food to equal the cost. I waited 6 months to post, Would I buy it again? Yes.

Rated 5 out of 5Â by eastvilllagekitchen Great but expensive fridge
1) Ultra Heavy - this refrigerator is extremely heavy. Shipping weight is over 500 pounds. Also, it's top heavy. It took 3 AJ Madison guys to get it into my apartment, and it took over an hour. They worked so hard I tipped them a lot. Second, moving it around in my apartment (up 2 steps here, through that hallway, under this overhang) was a nightmare. It took 4 guys. So keep this in mind.
2) Whisper quiet. It's unbelievably quiet. Standing next to it, I can't hear anything. After you open and close the door, the fan will go off for a few seconds, presumably to recirculate the cold air or something, but that's about all the noise you'll hear, and the ice maker.
3) Huge. Lots of capacity, very convenient to reach everything.
4) A bit hard to open the doors, but maybe that will loosen with time. I think also right after you close the door, reopening in the next couple seconds is tough because the fan inside creates a bit of a vacuum.
5) Overall, 3 weeks into the new fridge, we think it's great. The only downside is that is way expensive. $8000 + tax + delivery/installation. The only reason to get this versus a Liebher or LG or Frigidaire or something else is if you have the money to burn or for the resale value for your apartment.
