How to Choose a Room Air Conditioner
Compared to large capacity central units, room air conditioners have several advantages. The initial cost of a room air conditioning unit is significantly lower than the cost of central air. Because room air conditioners are designed for cooling small spaces, operating costs are reduced. And, room air conditioners can provide personalized temperature and humidity controls that central systems cannot.
Calculating Cooling Capacity
Cooling capacity is the critical factor in properly selecting a room air conditioner. Cooling capacity is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) and typical models will range in capacity from 5,000 BTUs to 28,500 BTUs.
Choosing an undersized unit will overwork the unit and it will not cool properly. Choosing an over-sized unit will cost more to buy and operate and it will not dehumidify properly.

Cooling Capacity by Room Size
Measure the length and width of the area to be cooled. Multiply the length by the width to determine square footage or square meters. Wall Opening for RAB46/47/48 Cases
A finished opening of 26 1/8" x 15 3/4", clear of intrusions, is required. Keep clearance of 4" from side walls. Brick veneer or frame walls should have wood studding surrounding case to provide firm anchoring with screws. Case can be fastened directly to brick or block walls with screws sunk in lead expansion shields. NOTE: units should be caulked on all four sides of case to the building exterior to assure building integrity.

Got this AC unit for the bedroom. It is easy to install. Just slide it into the wall sleeve, insulate and plug it it. The 3 settings are good and it cools the space adequately.
I don't know why thru-wall units are so much are expensive than window units. Aren't they basically the same except the placement of the compressor etc? That said I found the unit to be noisier than a PTAC but quieter than a window unit.
On the looks department, its not a looker. I plan on putting this behind a cabinet but is it so hard to make a good looking AC unit that doesn't cost $1K? the remote is a plasticky thing that does its function without an allusion to beauty.
Overall, the unit does the job it is suppose to...that is to cool the room down.

I have a condo in an older building that had a GE Thinline Air Conditioner that stopped working. I was able to replace it with the GE 8350 and use the skin from the GE Thinline which saved me money and time. The only difference was the old GE Thinline was wired for 220 and the GE 8350 is wired for 110.
This really helped me out and the tenant really likes the remote feature that comes with this unit.

this air conditioner overcomes some of the problems of older models but also has some drawbacks. One nice feature: You set a temperature, and the air conditioner slowly but surely cools the room down until it hits that temp, after which it cycles on and off like any other. It also has a remote control and is easy to slide into a thru-the-wall casing. Drawbacks: A bit noiser than it should be for the price, and it is no speed demon. While highly efficient, it definitely takes its time going about its work.

I made 2 bedrooms into 1 large on 2nd floor.Central A/C not pushing air upstairs.Put in the wall unit and can now raise temp downstairs. SAVED $3.00 a day in electric already not using big A/C all night. THANKS. Quiet operation for sleeping, easy install for diy.
