In the Beginning
In 1943, Westye F. Bakke built the first freestanding freezer in the basement of his Madison, WI. home. A businessman with a keen ability to anticipate post-World War II refrigeration trends, he founded Sub-Zero Freezer Company just two years later in an old two-car garage. From its modest beginnings, Sub-Zero has become what it is today: the recognized leading manufacturer of premium built-in home refrigerators.
Since its founding, Sub-Zero has pioneered quality products that meet its customers needs. In the mid-1950s, for example, the company developed the built-in refrigerator - a unit that changed the future of kitchen design by fitting within surrounding counter and cabinet space. Over time, the company has refined its early concept and has brought to market a comprehensive line of built-in models, including the 200 Series of undercounter models, its award-winning 500 Series, the design-flexible 600 Series, the integrated 700 Series, and, most recently, the state-of-the-art 400 Series of wine storage.
For 60 years, Sub-Zero has offered innovative, aesthetically appealing and technologically advanced solutions to meet virtually any home refrigeration need. Through foresight and responsiveness, the company has earned its position as an industry leader - a position Sub-Zero intends to maintain well into the new millennium.
What do you want your kitchen to be? Sub-Zero refrigerators, freezers and wine storage units are the definitive kitchen components. Made by hand. Tested to the nth degree. This fridge is an annuity plan for Sub-Zero and repair men. I would say its every 6-9 months, something needs to be replaced. When it works, its great. Just not great, knowing that its coming due, again.... Its become sort of a running joke with my repair guy, who gives me breaks on parts, as I have bought so many of them over the years. Seals, fan motors, compressor control. etc...
One note, this fridge actually benefits from rebooting! So turning it off and letting it sit for 30-40 min, can fix a lot of issues....

My Sub-Zero is 8 years old. I have had 5 major repairs over the years, and despite still being on warranty, the last repair cost me over 800.00. It is not working AGAIN, and the service man has been called. I thought I got a lemon, given the reputation of Sub Zero, but it seems that everyone has the same complaints.

I just want to balance the other reviews. I've had this fridge for 13 years. I had one problem once and when I made the mistake of paying a non-factory authorized repairman $900 cash for the repair Subzero offered to refund $500 of that price, and did. I'm surprised that something "can't be fixed". Even if you needed a new motor for $2K I can't imagine it couldn't be replaced. The upside is also that I have this completely invisible paneled fridge that blends in depth and height wise with
my other cabinetry. I'll never have something so beautiful again (fridge-wise). :)

We have had this fridge for 7 years and have had an endless number of problems with it. It was expensive but the only size that would fit our space. We have been sorely disappointed and recommend that you avoid purchasing this unit. The factory approved repairman is here again today, and the total for just today's work will be over $1200. We just keep having to pay for this expensive fridge.
