The unit mounts flush with the cooktop when not in operation, and is activated by light pressure on the cover which automatically raises a motor driven air intake chimney 7" above the cooktop. Purchased this downdraft to replace the GE monogram downdraft that was 16 years old. This Broan downdraft does not suck the smoke in and set off my alarm every single time I fried or cooked anything that has a little smoke like frying chicken wings or burger. Called manufacturer and they also agreed that this downdraft is very weak in sucking air. I ended up open the window and doors every night, and disable the smoke alarm that is located near the kitchen.

Poor packaging, was all scratched up when it arrived. Very loud when on, would get a external blower with this unit.
If your replacing a existing unit, the down draft is off center.
